The Fraser Fir Tree was named for John Fraser, who was a Scottish botanist that ventured to the southern Appalachians during his lifetime between 1750 and 1811. Many times the Fraser Fir Tree is sometimes called the Southern balsam or Southern balsam fir. Old timers and locals also sometimes call the Christmas Tree Fraser Fir a "She balsam" due to the appearance of lips on the tree's trunk. These "lips" are actually resin filled blisters that reside on the turnk.
